The Department of Architecture and Design (ArD) in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (SFEA) at the American University of Beirut, invites applications for a Tenure-Track Position in History of Art or Architecture.

At ArD, we understand the design disciplines as cultural practices that engage social, economic and political issues; and as critical tools of inquiry that integrate process with product, and methodology with representation in a multidisciplinary manner. Our inquiry through design comes with an acute awareness of our existence in a region with a multitude of languages and cultures, and of our location within Beirut with its exceptional physical fabric and cultural formats. The discourse in the department on the city is intense and pluralistic. It links the undergraduate and graduate programs of study in architecture, graphic design, and planning; and it facilitates close interaction between them and the professional community.

The department has two undergraduate programs, one in architecture and one in graphic design; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy and urban design. The department is currently working to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies.

We expect the successful candidate to contribute to the teaching of the core courses in the history of art and architecture sequence, offer advanced seminars in the area of his/her specialty, and advance the research/creative activities of the department. Our faculty members also contribute to ongoing curriculum assessment and growth, including the development of new graduate programs in the field. She or he will also have the opportunity to contribute to a department that is poised to grow and become a leading center for the study of design and planning in the region.

Only applicants with a PhD in the History of Art or Architecture will be considered. A focus on the modern period, preferably combined with a minor specialty in non-Western art or architecture, or in the cultures of the region or the Mediterranean rim is highly desirable. Demonstrated teaching experience is required as well.

Candidates are asked to submit 1) a letter of application that includes a brief statement of teaching philosophy and research/creative activity, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) samples of publications, 4) a teaching portfolio (samples of students’ work, syllabi…), and 5) the names and full contact information of at least three referees.
